So, what’s new?

The new Sony 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II comes with a lot of exciting updates that improve the usability and image quality for both stills imagery and video capturing. These consist of features like:

• significant weight reduction – 435g (29%) lighter than the MK I
• new faster autofocus motors
• a variable aperture control ring
• an additional stabilisation mode
• overall improvements in image quality for both photo- and videographers.

A lot has changed internally to accommodate the new XD ‘Extreme Dynamic’ linear focusing motors also found in other high-end Sony lenses like the 400mm F2.8 GM. In addition, Sony has simplified the internal lens design to reduce weight from 1480g to 1045g, a noticeable 29% improvement, adding to the enhanced ergonomics and transport capabilities. This also allows mounting on a gimbal like the DJI RS 2 Camera Gimbal.

The Mk II also offers an updated zoom ring with a shorter throw that can be easily be turned with minimum effort. The lens hood has been updated similar to the Sony 100-400mm GM OSS and features an opening that allows the operation of circular polarizing filters or variable ND filters. The front filter thread is the same 77mm as the Mk I.

The changes made and new additions like the de-clickable aperture ring do also impact the video performance. The manual focus ring is now linear, offering the option for reliable and repeatable manual focus pulls and the lens is virtually parfocal, allowing zooming without a changing focal plane. Focus breathing has also been significantly improved over the Mk I.

Used for a variety of purposes like for portraits, events (wedding/sports), landscapes, and wildlife, this new lens is a highly versatile lens with its wide range of focal length. The fast f/2.8 maximum aperture also allows for crisp bokeh especially at longer focal lengths and is bright enough for most purposes.
