Tamron has launched the 17–70mm F2.8 Di III-A VC RXD, a standard zoom lens for Fujifilm X-mount camera systems. This is the same lens announced for Sony E-mount camera systems back in January 2021.

It’s a perfect time for this lens launch with the new released Fujifilm X-H2S mirrorless camera. The Tamron has both 2.8 aperture AND AI based stabilisation (VC).

Focal lengths for all scenarios

This versatile zoom lens lets you enjoy shooting in a multitude of genres, from wide-angle scenes to telephoto moments. With a focal length range of 17mm to 70mm (a full-frame equivalent of 25.5-105mm). This is the world’s first fast-aperture F2.8 standard zoom lens for APS-C mirrorless cameras to achieve a 4.1x zoom ratio. It’s ideal for a variety of scenarios, from portraits and street snapshots, to landscapes and even close-ups.

Constant aperture

The 17-70mm F2.8 maintains its fast F2.8 maximum aperture throughout the entire zoom range. Unlike variable aperture lenses where the maximum aperture changes as you zoom. The F2.8 and high optical performance allows the 17-70mm F2.8 to capture your subjects with clear details from wide-angle to telephoto.

The three main advantages of a fast F2.8 aperture are:

Ability to shoot successfully in lower light levels
Beautiful and dreamy bokeh
Better control of depth-of-field. Which is particularly useful when intentionally limiting depth-of-field to improve portraits by blurring the area behind the main subject.

Structurally, the optical formula includes 16 elements in 12 groups. It was created in pursuit of superior optical performance, utilizing an effective allocation of two GM (Glass Molded Aspherical) lens elements and one aspherical hybrid lens element. The optical design ensures high resolution and high contrast not just in the center of the image but also in corners and at the edges.

Video shooting

The 17-70mm F2.8 is a standard zoom lens that’s ideal for not only still photography but also for video shooting. This lens has minimal focus breathing in which the angle of view changes depending on the focusing distance during videography. By counteracting focus breathing, the 17-70mm F2.8 empowers users’ expression of their creative intentions to the fullest degree. In addition, the quiet RXD AF drive motor and the VC image stabilization mechanism facilitate hand-held video shooting.

VC image stabilization

The 17-70mm F2.8 utilizes TAMRON’s highly regarded VC image stabilization system to maximize the inherent optical performance of the lens. It reduces the degradation of picture quality caused by camera shake that is likely to occur during hand-held shooting at slow shutter speeds under low-light conditions indoors or at dusk. When shooting video, image stabilization leveraging AI technology will automatically perform the best compensation for different shooting situations.

Autofocus for every shooting opportunity

The AF drive on the 17-70mm F2.8 includes an RXD motor unit to help you stay focused on the action. RXD uses an actuator to precisely control the rotational angle of the motor. It allows to directly drive the focusing lens without passing through a reduction gear. A sensor that precisely detects the position of the lens enables high-speed and accurate AF, which is ideal when shooting and recording continually moving subjects. And with a focusing system that is both smooth and quiet, the 17-70mm F2.8 lets you shoot free from stress not worrying about the drive sound in a quiet environment.

MOD of 0.19m (7.5 in) for amazing close-ups

This advanced lens focuses extremely close for a standard zoom lens for APS-C mirrorless cameras. The MOD is just 0.19m at the wide-angle end and 0.39m at the telephoto end. When shooting very close to the subject, the lens enables expressive imagery with highly blurred backgrounds. This allows you to create unique photos of a variety of subjects, from snapshots to portraits, landscapes, and even architectural photography. Close-up shots of your main subjects taken at the 17mm end maximize the unique perspective only true wide-angle lenses can deliver.
